Jewellery designer Sophie Bille Brahe was born in Copenhagen, Denmark.
She began making jewellery as a child in a small workshop built
for her to explore her passion by her alternative-bohemian school. Sophie
studied fine jewellery design at the royal college of art in London, and trained
with master-jewellers in Copenhagen.
Encouraged by fashion insiders she founded her label in 2011. At
her studio within a converted schoolhouse in Copenhagen jewellery is made by
hand using centuries-old goldsmith techniques.
Sophie’s love of storytelling is inherited, passed down through
generations, beginning with her great-great-great grandfather who was the
celebrated astronomer Tycho Brahe.
Each new collection begins with Sophie creating a universe,
immersing herself in a world, whether that’s ancient Egypt, constellations or
japanese mythology. Her references often come from the night sky.
Sophie’s first hit was the croissant de lune; a single earring consisting
of a row of graduating diamonds delicately emphasising the line of the ear. Her
take on the classic diamond earring signalled Sophie’s understanding
of what women want to wear, and her talent for finding new ways of thinking
about jewellery. An instant classic, the earring has become her signature.
In 2016, she
collaborated with Sacai creative director Chitose Abe, on a small collection
inspired by Sophie’s iconic styles: the croissant de lune and the ellipse
earrings.
